Problem Nature and Extent

Service Credit Union retained Aries to conduct “Due Diligence” Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) to identify potential or existing environmental contamination liabilities at the former Ralph’s Truck World facility.  Since 1942, site operations included:  truck sales; truck part salvaging, recycling and storage; truck part rebuilding and repair; and anti-freeze recycling.  Aries’ Phase I ESA recommended removing remaining truck parts and tires, cleaning liquids and sludges from the site oil/water separators, and conducting additional Phase II subsurface explorations in areas of identified recognized environmental conditions. 


  • Aries’ Phase II ESA included laboratory analysis of soil and groundwater samples to characterize existing site conditions. Aries’ Phase II explorations identified limited areas of petroleum-contaminated site soil which exceeded applicable NHDES soil standards, and low concentrations of petroleum-related compounds in site groundwater above applicable NHDES groundwater standards. 
  • During redevelopment activities, three previously unknown leaking waste oil and gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs) were discovered, which resulted in two separate Initial Response Action (IRA) remedial soil excavations and the establishment of a Groundwater Management Zone and Permit. Subsequent groundwater monitoring indicated that the IRA remediation was successful, and NHDES issued a Certificate of No Further Action within three years of the leaking UST discoveries, allowing Service Credit Union to construct their new corporate headquarters at the site. 
  • Based on Aries’ Phase I and Phase II services, the former property owner removed the remaining solid waste and truck parts, excavated the identified contaminated soils for off-site treatment, and cleaned the site oil/water separators.
